Summer Return Authorization 2025: key requirements, exceptions and recommendations

Are you renewing your residence permit in Spain and need to travel this summer?

The Instruction 3/2025 of the General Commissariat for Aliens and Borders establishes the conditions for the processing of the authorization to return between June 15 and September 30, 2025. Below, we explain everything you need to know to avoid problems in your travels.

What is the return authorization?

It is an official document that allows foreign individuals to leave Spain temporarily and returneven if your green card is not yet valid. expired or in the process of renewalprovided that it has been requested within the legal term.

Who can apply for Return Authorization?

This authorization may be requested by any foreigner whose authorization of residence or stay:

• Is expired or about to expire, y
• You have already initiated the corresponding renewal or extension procedure.

It also includes those with authorization of stay for study purposes (student card) in the process of renewal, or who have already obtained a visa for the first time.

Special exception summer 2025

During the period between June 15, 2025 and September 30, 2025exceptionally, entry into Spain will be permitted by land or maritime bordersThe return authorization is not required, if the person presents it:

• Valid passport or travel document
• Resident card expired
• Proof of request for renewal in process

If you travel by air, authorization is mandatory!

Important: Airlines may refuse boarding to foreign nationals who do not have:

• A current residence, o
• A return authorization issued by the immigration authorities

Therefore, if you are going to leave or return to Spain by plane, you do need to arrange your return authorization to the corresponding police station.

Valid only for entry through Spain

Return authorization is only valid for crossing the border through Spanish border crossing points..
It does not allow entry through other Schengen countries.according to Regulation (EU) 399/2016. If you make a stopover in another European country before arriving in Spain, you could have problems with immigration control.
